NHS Application

A Letter To Prospective NHS Members

TO:             NHS Applicant and Prospective Member

FROM:      The National Honor Society Membership Committee

RE:              Application Requirements & Process

Thank you for your interest in the Oceanside High School chapter of the National Honor Society.  When the National Honor Society was founded in 1921, it was with the hope of creating an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy.  These ideals of scholarship, character, service and leadership remain as relevant today as they were in 1921.  Now more than 75 years later, the National Honor Society has become a prestigious organization, ranking high among administrators, faculty members, students, parents, and residents of the school community.  Its reputation for excellence is the result of years of commitment on the part of everyone involved.  Through NHS chapter service activities, members maintain and extend the qualities that won them selection.  Membership is both an honor and a commitment.

The application process is designed for efficiency and impartiality.  Qualifications require you to have a 3.50 G.P.A, to submit a letter of application and a completed Student Activity Information Form, neither of which may exceed two pages, and a letter of recommendation from a teacher at OHS.   You should also include a copy of your transcript.   Choose your teacher wisely as they will play an important role in your future induction.  A teacher should  only recommend one student per semester.

Your letter of application must discuss the specific evidence and activities that demonstrate how you embody the four strengths required of NHS membership: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.  You might consider why/how your past activities qualify you for membership and how you plan to contribute to NHS.  It must be in 12 pt. font and double-spaced.   Seniors also need to address why they waited until their final year of high school to apply.

You must also attend a short tutorial with current NHS students at lunch in room T-104 on one of the dates listed on the application.  This is to ensure you submit an application which will put you in the best light.

Please submit your original plus  TWO (2) copies of your completed application (two copies of your letter, your recommendation and two copies of your Student Activity Form) to the Faculty Council.  Please type your name on each page of both copies of your application and staple your letters to the Student Activity Form. Failure to comply will result in automatic rejection of your application.  Please put copies of letters and activity forms in an envelope and return to Room T-104 by 2:30 P.M. on the application due date.  There will be no exceptions.

Once again, thank you for your interest in the National Honor Society.
