Pre-AP English 10

Course Description

English 10 Pre-AP is designed as a precursory course to 11th grade Advanced Placement English Language and Composition. Students will be required to read a variety of seminal literary and non-fiction texts and conduct style analyses of the literary/ rhetorical devices authors use to develop purpose for their pieces. They will commonly demonstrate mastery over the structure of multiple genres of writing through on-demand compositions and multi-step synthesis process papers based on released AP Literature/ Language and Composition free response questions. To refine logical inference skills, students will periodically respond to multiple-choice questions similar to those that will appear on the Advanced Placement in Literature/ Language and Composition Exam. Additionally, students will participate in a range of collaborative discussions, Socratic seminars, and multi-media presentations in order to refine their speaking and listening skills and demonstrate 21st century communication. 

Course Goals

English 10 Pre-AP is an intensive year-long course primarily designed to provide students with the foundational skills necessary for success in Advanced Placement Language and Composition. The course will focus on examining the relationship between an author’s purpose for his or her piece and how the literary techniques used contribute to the overall meaning as a whole. Weekly discussions of literary and informational texts will occur. Weekly writing assignments will include practice and mastery of interpretation, drawing logical inferences, critical analysis, and timed writings. Writing samples will include practice with reflection, opinion, and conversational issues as applicable to the pre-determined essential question. Students will frequently be required to conduct research for both primary and secondary sources in order to support their perspective. Historical literacy and linguistic analysis will enter into these studies as frequently as time permits. 


As critical thinkers and analytical readers/ researchers, students will:

  • Recognize and cite strong textual information in support of individual claims about a text
  • Reflect on the cultural perspectives presented in a wide range of world literature 
  • Explain how Biblical, mythological, and historical allusion functions in a specific work 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact literary fiction/ non-fiction has on culture and government. 


As insightful writers, students will: 

  •  Embed relevant information from the texts in compositions. 
  • Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support literary analysis. 
  • Conduct research to answer a question and synthesize multiple sources on the topic. 
  • Introduce precise claim(s), establish the significance of the claim(s), and sequence the claim(s), reasons and evidence. 
  • Demonstrate an ability to anticipate the audience’s knowledge level, concerns, values, and possible biases. 
  • Present a formal, objective tone, and uses words, phrases, and clauses as well as varied syntax in an argumentative essay 
  • Use standard English conventions of usage and mechanics while attending to the norms of the discipline (e.g., MLA, APA, etc.). 
  • Strategically use academic and domain-specific vocabulary appropriate for the audience and purpose. 


As effective communicators, students will:
