Course Description
English 10 A/B is a one-year course designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop the language skills that will prepare them for real-world situations and promote college and career readiness. In this course students refine the skills necessary for the development of academic literacy. These strategies include:
- Active reading with literary and informational texts
- Tier II and Tier III academic language development of text-embedded vocabulary
- Oral Language Practice
- Informational/ Argumentative/ Narrative/ Synthesis writing
Instructional strategies will be designed to develop the analytical skills students will need for advanced performance in the 21st century. Students will be required to demonstrate higher-order, critical thinking in all domains of the Common Core State Standards (Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening, and Language), with a particular focus on reading to synthesize multiple literary and informational texts in order to analyze and construct coherent writing. Most activities where students are deemed to have demonstrated mastery of the standard will require students to perform at a Depth of Knowledge [DOK] Level 3 or higher.
The course is required for graduation, and all students earning a passing grade are considered to have completed one of the requirements for proficiency in the Oceanside Unified School District.
